BLACK RIVER
I sometimes think
that this black river,
which flows through my city
and so through my life,
is like the ribbon
on a typewriter.
And when I cross over it
my thoughts plunge deep into the cold water
and rise up from beneath it,
stamping them crisp 
on the pale porcelain sky.
